Scalable fonts: they are fonts that you can change, as I've just described. You can alter their shape or size because they are stored as an outline and this outline can be changed. They are much more flexible than bit-mapped fonts, which can't be changed at all. This kind of font is stored as a whole image made up of dots, not just as an outline, and you get a distorted image of the font if you try to scale it..
